The Geldersekade is located in the historic centre of Amsterdam, it is one of the oldest canals in the city. The canal, with the Kloveniersburgwal as its extension, was dug around 1425 and formed the eastern border of Amsterdam for more than a century and a half. At the beginning and end of the Geldersekade are the only two secular buildings from the Middle Ages that Amsterdam has: the Schreierstoren and the Waag. Of the 110 buildings on the Geldersekade, no fewer than 67 are national monuments. The quay is now on the border of 'new' and 'old' Amsterdam. The Oosterdokseiland to the north of the Geldersekade is a new area with a mix of functions, including housing, restaurants, coffee shops (including Starbucks), shops, a fitness centre, DoubleTree by Hilton and the OBA.
